Windward Cove
modern supernatural rp
The rain...it was fitting. As the procession of people moved in solemn rows of black umbrellas over black suits and dresses, wet heels trying to evade puddles that were deep enough to consume the shallow souls of those left behind. Windward Cove was a town of skeleton crews and wreckage left behind from an unseen war no one could explain. Some claimed it was the plague that decimated their population, leaving behind only a third of the humans and less than that of the supernaturals.

Others knew it for what it was. A witch's curse, sent to punish a town who’d turned their back on her family. Bitter, Clementine Fallston returned to end the sickness infecting towns all over the world. Supernaturals. The witch used her powers for ‘good’ and had utilized a deadly amount of witchcraft in a curse so abhorrent it had purged the entire town of any supernatural presence.

Two witch covens, one pack of wolves, two vampire houses...and every lone creature who walked the wave ridden oceanside to the thick vegetation of forestry on the west...had fallen victim. Like a forest burned to the ground, the town of Windward Cove had been taken to its knees. Seemingly, abandoned and empty of a good amount of its population, the town turned sleepy. Nothing significant happened, everyone seemed to go about life in a form of shell shock that had no clear ending insight.

Leave town? Some did, others were too poor, to attached, or just to damn stubborn to give up on the dying town.

Perhaps it was those stubborn souls that drew in the interest, shining bright beacons of hope in a pool of inky despair. The Courts of the Fae nations looked upon Windward Cove with pity or curiosity, depending on who you asked. No place was as ripe for change as this place here. With a thriving sea on the east side and a lush forest on the west, the Fae saw potential where the rest of the world saw darkness.

It was three years since the devastating plague/curse had taken its toll, but something in the air changed. Life began to grow, a small smile here, a soft hum of music, a picture drawn and hung just right...and from little seeds of Fae inspiration grew a thriving town, filled with a variety of clubs, dance studios, music halls! Parks filled with poets and productions. Business’ began to thrive and attract attention. People lived again and the dark gloom of death began to rise from over their heads. It was not easy though, there were bouts of relapses into fear. Remnants of the witches spell activated here and there in places she had hidden pockets before dying. The Fae had trouble finding them and had no way of knowing how many existed, and so they did their best to continue to inspire those in the town. Although, some inspiration from the Fae was not all it was cracked up to be, some pushed to far eliciting manic personalities driven to succeed or crumbling under defeat and falling to the use of drugs. Some Fae inspired just to feed off of a human later. As in all things, the Fae were not all good or all bad.

As the town grew, so did interest from other supernatural creatures, drawn in by the Fae magic. Everyone knew if the Fae were involved or interested in a space, that place would flourish for the supernatural races.

So this is where we find our story...in the beginning of a new era, the possibilities endless, despite the towns recent history and threat of hidden spells popping up to claim a life here and there...even the supernaturals could not resist the promise held on the shores of Windward Cove.

1. Merry Gentry Series by Laurell K Hamilton

user posted image

Synopsis: The series follows Princess Meredith NicEssus aka "Merry Gentry", a faerie princess that is forced to flee the court of her aunt Andais, the Queen of Air and Darkness and of the Unseelie fae. The first novel takes place after Merry has spent several years outside of her aunt's court out of fear of death via court sanctioned duels. Merry is soon brought back to the Unseelie Court and given the option to take her aunt's throne, but only if she can procreate before her sadistic cousin Cel can. She is allowed to take several of Andais's court guards with her and through the course of the series gains more lovers that are drawn to her side through love, friendship, power, promises for protection, and/or bargains struck with other magical creatures. Merry eventually gets involved in a series of secrets and court intrigues as she discovers that both of the rulers of the Seelie and Unseelie courts are potentially infertile, something that has the potential to keep both the followers in each court from producing new fae children. At the end of Divine Misdemeanors Merry has not only managed to become pregnant with twins, but has formed her own informal court, complete with lands and grounds that she has not fully investigated. She has also alienated herself from both the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, as she was responsible for the death of her cousin Cel of the Unseelie Courts and filed charges against her uncle Taranis, the ruler of the Seelie Court, for rape.

2. Anita Blake Series by Laurell K Hamilton

Synopsis:

The series takes place in a parallel universe where supernatural creatures and powers are real and their presence is public knowledge. Supernatural beings are considered citizens with most of the rights of regular humans. The novels follow legal vampire executioner Anita Blake's ongoing conflicts with the supernatural as she attempts to solve a variety of mysteries, come to terms with her own abilities, and navigate an increasingly complex series of romantic and political relationships. As the series progresses, Anita's perspective on the supernatural changes; initially she sees preternatural beings simply as "monsters" to be fought, and later grows to see them as communities to be protected, as well as possible love interests.

3. Women of the Otherworld by Kelly Armstrong

Synopsis

5. Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

Synopsis:

Richard Mayhew is an unassuming young businessman living in London, with a dull job and a pretty but demanding fiancee. Then one night he stumbles across a girl bleeding on the sidewalk. He stops to help her--and the life he knows vanishes like smoke.

Several hours later, the girl is gone too. And by the following morning Richard Mayhew has been erased from his world. His bank cards no longer work, taxi drivers won't stop for him, his landlord rents his apartment out to strangers. He has become invisible, and inexplicably consigned to a London of shadows and darkness a city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels, that exists entirely in a subterranean labyrinth of sewer canals and abandoned subway stations. He has fallen through the cracks of reality and has landed somewhere different, somewhere that is Neverwhere.

For this is the home of Door, the mysterious girl whom Richard rescued in the London Above. A personage of great power and nobility in this murky, candlelit realm, she is on a mission to discover the cause of her family's slaughter, and in doing so preserve this strange underworld kingdom from the malevolence that means to destroy it. And with nowhere else to turn, Richard Mayhew must now join the Lady Door's entourage in their determined--and possibly fatal--quest.

For the dread journey ever-downward--through bizarre anachronisms and dangerous incongruities, and into dusty corners of stalled time--is Richard's final hope, his last road back to a "real" world that is growing disturbingly less real by the minute.

If Tim Burton reimagined The Phantom of the Opera, if Jack Finney let his dark side take over, if you rolled the best work of Clive Barker, Peter Straub and Caleb Carr into one, you still would have something that fell far short of Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. It is a masterful debut novel of darkly hypnotic power, and one of the most absorbing reads to come along in years.
